Well if that first month rocked our world, this second one rocked our home! After over a month in the N.I.C.U (Gracen 34 days, Gwen 41 days), you guys came home! May 20, the day after dad’s birthday, Dr. Tangavaal called and non-chalantly asked if we’d like to take Gracen home. Umm….YES PLEASE! Talk about a plethora of emotions though. Parent guilt, turns out, is a real thing. Having a baby home was so fun and exhausting, but balancing this new life with the other life at the N.I.C.U was a doozy. For those 7 long/happy/stressed out days, daddy watched Gracen at home at 11, while mommy snuck some snuggle time with Gwen. Then we’d switch at 8pm. The next Monday (May 27), we got the second call! Gwen could finally come home! And she came home without oxygen! During those 41 days, 38 were filled with Gwen needing a form of oxygen. It was so stressful because we knew that prolonged extra oxygen exposure could bring about other side effects, but the docs told us she really needed it. We’d come home in tears sometimes because Gwen’s little lungs would take a step backward every few days. But then we remembered that even though Gwen needed more oxygen on a certain day, she’d always take two steps forward. What a little fighter we have on our hands!
Speaking of hands…people besides nurses got to hold you guys this month! Loved ones had to patiently wait to meet you girls because of the visitation limits in the N.I.C.U, but when we finally broke you out, we took you on your first world tour! We totally surprised the Gardners, then went over to papa and nannie’s (on mommy’s side), then hightailed it to great grandmas where dad’s side of the family waited in anticipation.
You girls are so amazing. Watching you grow in front of our eyes reminds us of God’s faithfulness to His Kids. I pray that I’ll always shout God’s faithfulness from the rooftops. – YOUR ONE HAPPY DAD
